The Strange & Curious Tale of the Last True Hermit

2014 Aug 21, 3:02

The story of Chris Knight, living in isolation in the woods of Maine for 27 years.

'Anyone who reveals what he's learned, Chris told me, is not by his definition a true hermit. Chris had come around on the idea of himself as a hermit, and eventually embraced it. When I mentioned Thoreau, who spent two years at Walden, Chris dismissed him with a single word: “dilettante.”'

'But still, I pressed on, there must have been some grand insight revealed to him in the wild…”Get enough sleep.”'

I don’t want to brag, but I’ve been telling that people all along and I didn’t have to live alone in the woods for decades.

Star Trek: TNG Season 8 illustration has us longing for more [Star Trek]

2012 Mar 5, 3:17

Fictional plot summaries of TNG S8 episodes.    Like:

  • Q’s back: he’s wearing scuba gear and needs Picard’s help dumping his girlfriend. Barclay accidentally locks himself outside the ship.
  • Geordie and Data nurse a space bird back to health, and are sad when they have to release it. Picard is trapped in a turbolift with a baby.
  • Starfleet sends a cantankerous admiral to boss around Picard during delicate peace talks. Data seems to have mastered bragging.
  • Riker’s ex-girlfriend arrives and dies, leaving behind a pile of glowing dust and a mystery. Picard is trapped on a turbolift with a horse.
  • A planet of suspicious docents abduct Riker for their museum of amazing men. Geordi and Data are too excited to sleep at their sleepover.
  • Picard is trapped inside a sentient turbolift. A clip show highlights the most memorable “Picard is trapped on a turbolift” moments.

Man Unfortunately Sleeps Like Baby

Just discussing this recently. Maybe sleeps like a baby is meant to indicate the depth of the sleep and not the duration?

End Love by OK Go

2010 Jun 19, 3:57

OK Go's new music video for End Love. It looks like a single shot of just over a day sped up. Sarah doubts it though based on the lack of them eating, drinking, or taking care of other bodily needs besides sleep.

Chumby will be cool, despite its name

2008 Feb 19, 1:51

Bedside ChumbyI signed up for the pre-release beta and purchased a Chumby last year. Chumby looks like a cousin to a GPS unit. Its similar in size with a touch screen, but has WiFi, accelerometers, and is pillow like on the sides that aren't a screen. In practice its like an Internet alarm clock that shows you photos and videos off the Web. Its hackable in that Chumby Industries tells you about the various ways to run your own stuff on the Chumby, modifying the boot sequence (it runs Linux), turning on sshd, etc, etc. The Chumby forum too has lots of info from folks who have found interesting hacks for the device.

When you turn on the Chumby it downloads and runs the latest version of the Chumby software which lets you set alarms, play music, and display Flash widgets. The Chumby website lets anyone upload their own Flash widgets to share with the community. I tried my hand at creating one using Adobe's free Flash creation SDK but I don't know Flash and didn't have the patience to learn.

Currently my Chumby is set to wake me up at 8am on weekdays with music from ShoutCast and then displays traffic and weather. At 10am everyday it switches to showing me a slide-show of LolCats. At 11pm it switches to night mode where it displays the time in dark grey text on a black background at a reduced light level so as not to disturb me while I sleep.

I like the Chumby but I have two complaints. The first is that it forces me to learn flash in order to create anything cool rather than having a built-in Web browser or depending on a more Web friendly technology. The second complaint is about its name. At first I thought the name was stupid in a kind of silly way, but now that I'm used to the name it sounds vaguely dirty.

Vacation Starts

2003 Mar 23, 4:39My finals are finished and I'm on vacation! Yay! The past two weeks have been killer. I got very little sleep during dead week with various speeches and projects due. But that's all over with now. Presently, I'm enjoying sitting and doing nothing. Perhaps I'll even work on my long neglected tetris game. Yay again!PermalinkComments

Joined LiveJournal

2003 Feb 12, 1:35After much insisting and assisting from Jessica, I have a Live Journal account. Hopefully in the near future I'll be able to make it look respectable and add in more friends. Thanks for the code and suggestions Jessica. This morning, I ran around collecting various forms from a plethora of offices in an attempt to figure out how to graduate. I had a modicum of success and I'm fairly happy, but all this thinking about the future has left me feeling tired and little time to study for Chemistry, or, as I refer to it, the class I hope I don't have to take next quarter. Speaking of which, I really should get back to that. Or maybe I'll just go to sleep.PermalinkComments
