How Flash Drives and Social Engineering can Compromise Networks

2010 Jan 22, 1:44"He seeded the customer's parking lot with USB flash drives, each of which had a Trojan horse installed on it. When the employees arrived for work in the morning, they were quite excited to find the free gadgets laying around the parking lot. Employees eagerly collected the USB drives and plugged them into the first computers they came across: their own workstations."PermalinkCommentsvia:ericlaw security usb windows social-engineering computer technical

Official Google Blog: A new approach to China

2010 Jan 12, 9:02"We have decided we are no longer willing to continue censoring our results on Google.cn, and so over the next few weeks we will be discussing with the Chinese government the basis on which we could operate an unfiltered search engine within the law, if at all. We recognize that this may well mean having to shut down Google.cn, and potentially our offices in China."PermalinkCommentsgoogle china politics privacy censorship internet web search

Public Domain Day

2010 Jan 6, 3:41Public Domain Day sounds neat. Not just celebrating the public domain but celebrating new works now available in the public domain every Jan 1st. But we'll have to wait at least nine years to celebrate in the US. We need to get the copyright lifetime to match up with retro things regaining popularity -- like when big band music was briefly popular again.PermalinkCommentscopyright ip public-domain law legal

Get cached images from your visitors | Diovo

2009 Dec 15, 2:01"Jeff Atwood (Coding Horror fame) was in for a horror when he realized that his server crashed and his data was gone and due to some reason, the backup mechanism was not working. ... So what should Jeff do now? Since Coding horror is a high traffic blog, I think there is a way to get back at least some of the images." Reconstruct the HTML from Google's cache, change the HTTP server to tell the client it has the correct cached image for all the images, add script to the HTML to grab the images and send them back. Awesome idea. Of course now I want to setup Fiddler to swap in random images...PermalinkCommentsvia:ericlaw jeff-atwood backup web http cache image javascript technical

Yahoo Issues Takedown Notice for Spying Price List | Threat Level | Wired.com

2009 Dec 7, 5:15"Yahoo isn’t happy that a detailed menu of the spying services it provides law enforcement agencies has leaked onto the web." ... "Cryptome also published lawful data-interception guides for Cox Communications, SBC, Cingular, Nextel, GTE and other telecoms and service providers. But of all those companies, it appears to be Yahoo’s lawyers alone who have issued a DMCA takedown notice to Cryptome demanding the document be removed."PermalinkCommentsprivacy security copyright yahoo dmca internet web surveillance

Sprint fed customer GPS data to cops over 8 million times

2009 Dec 1, 9:40Wow: 'The fact that federal, state, and local law enforcement can obtain communications "metadata"—URLs of sites visited, e-mail message headers, numbers dialed, GPS locations, etc.—without any real oversight or reporting requirements should be shocking, but it isn't. The courts ruled in 2005 that law enforcement doesn't need to show probable cause to obtain your physical location via the cell phone grid. All of the aforementioned metadata can be accessed with an easy-to-obtain pen register/trap & trace order. But given the volume of requests, it's hard to imagine that the courts are involved in all of these.'PermalinkCommentsprivacy security gps phone cellphone government politics

Recap Firefox Extension | "turning PACER around"

2009 Aug 14, 3:55The government program PACER is an online archive of court records and even though the documents are public domain, PACER charges access to them ostensibly to pay for PACER. This plugin uses the Internet Archive as a kind of free intermediate cache, rewriting the PACER HTML to reference the free Internet Archive versions of the documents when available and uploading PACER documents to the IA cache when you download one it doesn't yet have.PermalinkCommentsvia:waxy firefox government politics research reference legal law plugin technical
